Schedules and periods

A schedule field adds a timeline of dated periods to any collection item — no code, no separate collection per period. Add a field of type Schedule to a collection, then edit its periods on any item of that collection.

Each period has:

  • A name (shown to you and, where you choose to display it, to visitors).
  • A start and end date-time. Periods are ordered and cannot overlap.
  • Gates — on/off switches for whether people can submit, edit, or see things during this period.
  • Columns you define for the field (for example Price or Capacity) — fill in a value per period.

Add, remove, and reorder periods, and fill in dates, gates, and columns, directly in the CMS field editor. The editor shows you which period is current right now.

At any moment, a schedule has at most one current period — the one whose dates contain right now — or none, if you’re between periods. Nothing before the first period or after the last one counts as current either.

A schedule by itself is just a timeline. It becomes useful once other things on your site point at it:

  • A form can require its current period’s submit gate to be open before accepting a submission, and stamp each submission with the period it was submitted in (see Forms).
  • A member’s own entry can only be edited while the current period’s edit gate is open — move the deadline in the schedule and every existing entry’s edit lock updates immediately, without republishing anything.
  • Page content can show or hide based on the current period, or on whether a date has passed (see Pages that change with time).

A festival’s “2026 Edition” item carries a schedule with three periods:

Period Dates Submit Price
Early bird Jan 1 – Feb 1 open €40
Regular Feb 1 – Mar 1 open €55
Late Mar 1 – Mar 15 closed €70

The public entry form is wired to this schedule (via an edition): it accepts submissions while any period’s submit gate is open, and stamps each entry with that period’s name and price automatically. Set the Late period’s submit gate to closed the moment you decide entries are done — no page edit, no republish.

A schedule is a field, like any other field on a collection — it doesn’t need its own collection or its own item. Most sites that use one put it on a small container collection with one item per recurring round (an edition, a season, a cohort) — that pattern is covered in Recurring editions.
